Platform Trolleys & Trucks

How do I choose the right platform truck?

Important factors you should consider when selecting a platform truck are the dimensions and weight of the products being transported. Remember to always allow a safety buffer when calculating the weight.

Another consideration to factor into your decision is space available. Keep aisle widths and ground conditions in mind when making your selection.

All our platform truck ranges have a choice of side and end options to help retain loads during movement preventing accidents and breakages.

Total stop brakes for parking and loading/unloading on slopes are available either as standard or as an optional extra.

Trolleys with plastic bases can be used in damp environments and are easy to clean and hygienic.

What is the maximum weight a platform truck can carry?

Our platform trolley ranges offer a choice of load capacities from 150kg to 500kg. For greater weights consider a turntable steering truck.

When selecting your capacity always remember these are uniformly distributed loads over the whole deck area of the trolley.

If products have a high point loading, select a trolley with a greater capacity.

How do I safely load and operate a platform truck?

When loading a platform truck, ensure the load is evenly distributed across all of the deck. Load the heaviest product at the bottom. For unusually shaped products or tall items, make sure that these are supported against the sides of the truck or restrained so that they won’t move while truck is in operation.

We also have a range of trolleys specifically designed for long goods and board or sheet products.

Do not try to hold the products in place whilst moving as this is unsafe. Instead stop and reposition, or use a restraint. Only unload the truck when stationary and if applicable apply the brakes.

How should platform trucks be stored when not in use?

When platform trucks are not in use, they should be stored in a safe area, avoiding obstruction of aisles or passageways. Ensure the trolley is clean before storage.

Can I use platform trucks outdoors?

Standard platform trolleys can be used outdoors if the ground is solid and level, for example concrete or tarmac. It is always a good practice to dry off the trolley when bringing indoors.

If the ground is uneven or material such as gravel or grass, it is best to use trolleys with a larger wheel diameter, for example turntable steering trucks.

What are the best practices for maintaining a platform truck to ensure its longevity?

Platform trolleys should be regularly cleaned and inspected for wear and tear or broken components. Apply a good quality lubricant to castor and wheel bearings.

Sack Trucks & Trolleys

What are the key features of the sack truck styles available?

We have a range of sack trucks suitable for most environments. The two popular truck materials used in construction are steel, which is hard wearing, economic and strong, and aluminium, which is robust but lighter in weight.

Wheel types include solid rubber for hard smooth surfaces, and pneumatic and puncture-proof wheels for uneven ground and rough terrain.

Additional features available include:

  • tri-wheel stair climbers
  • trolleys with folding toes and handles for storage
  • convertible trucks that can also be used as a platform truck

We also have a variety of handle styles.

How do I choose the correct sack truck weight capacity?

Sack trucks are available in a variety of weight capacities. As a safety factor always choose a truck with a greater capacity than the anticipated load. Overloading a truck can be dangerous to both the operator and nearby personnel, and also risks damage to the goods being carried.

Do I need an aluminium or steel sack truck?

Steel trucks are strong, hard wearing and economic to buy.

Aluminium trucks are lighter in weight but also have a good carrying capacity. This is particularly useful when delivering goods on vehicles where the trolley has to be frequently loaded and unloaded.

Aluminium will also not rust in damp environments, such as catering applications.

What is the difference between a fixed toe plate and a folding toe plate?

There are two types of folding toe sack trucks.

First, we have trucks available with a folding toe. These minimise space usage and are particularly useful when being used on a delivery vehicle. Some of these trucks are also available with a fold-down handle, ideal for tight spaces such as a car boot.

Second, we offer dual toe trucks. These have a conventional fixed toe plate and a longer fold-down toe that can be used to carry bulky items.

What is a stair climber sack truck, and how does it work?

A stair climbing truck has a plate with three wheels on either side of the frame. This tri-wheel is in continuous contact with the steps as the truck moves up or down stairs. It therefore reduces the amount of physical effort for the user to go up and down steps and stairs.

How do I safely operate a sack truck or trolley?

Never exceed the maximum load capacity of a truck. If in doubt, split the load and make multiple trips. Load the heaviest product at the bottom. Be sure that you can see ahead at all times, watching out for any hazards or other people.

Are there maintenance requirements for a sack truck?

Sack trolleys should be regularly checked, cleaned and inspected for wear and tear or broken components. If there is anything untoward, take the truck out of service until it can be repaired or replaced. Apply a good quality lubricant to wheel bearings.

Shelf Trolleys & Trucks

How do I choose the right shelf truck or trolley?

There are a number of Important factors you should consider when selecting a shelf truck; the dimensions and weight of the products being transported, the number of different variations, use a different shelf for different items.

Aisle and floor space is another consideration, ensure there is space available including turning room

Our heavy duty range is also available with the option of retention sides to keep loads safe during transportation.

Total stop brakes for parking when loading/unloading on slopes are available as an optional extra. When storing the trolley not in use, always apply the brake for safety.

What is the maximum weight a shelf trolley can carry?

Our standard range of shelf trolleys have a load capacity of 250kg and the heavy duty range have a capacity of 500kg.

This is the maximum “Uniformly Distributed Load” spread across the number of shelves and distributed across each shelf.

Always allow a safety factor when calculating your load.

Tray & Table Trolleys

What are the main benefits of using a tray trolley?

Tray and table trolleys are ideal for all working environments. The BASICS range includes models for office, retail and catering use, all the way through to engineering and workshop applications.

The principal benefit is to provide a safe level platform at a working height that is also mobile. The table can be used for any number of jobs from repairs to products or order picking, to delivering items. All our tray and table trolleys have the option of extra lower decks for additional storage.

What is the load capacity for tray trolleys?

Our range of table and tray trolleys have capacities from 150kg to 500kg. This is a uniformly distributed load and must be divided by the number of platforms on the trolley, and loads should be evenly spread across the area of each platform.

How do I safely load and operate a tray trolley?

When loading a table or tray trolley ensure the load is carefully stacked and secured as required to avoid movement during transportation. Place the heaviest items at the bottom. Be aware of the trolley load capacity; if in doubt break the load into separate journeys. During the journey take care to watch for people crossing your path, and obstacles or hazards. If applicable, apply the brakes when stationary.

Are there weather-resistant models suitable for outdoor use?

Plastic tray table trolleys can be used outside provided the ground is smooth and level. However, it is always advisable to store them indoors.

Steel or timber tray trolleys have a good quality paint finish suitable for occasional outside use, but these should be stored indoors and wiped down from any rainwater or splashes.

How do I choose the right plastic bin or tub?

We offer two types of bin; interstacking and tapered. The interstacking bins are available in four heights that can all stack on each other. There are five sizes of tapered bins, these will nest inside another bin of the same size; this saves storage space when empty. What colour options are available?

Our food grade trolleys and bins come in a variety of colours. See the options show on each page. On some items we also have a wider choice of colours available on request, with a slightly longer lead-time.

Black recycle material is also available on some of the trolley products, which is a more economic option but not suitable for food usage.

How do I maintain my trolley or bin?

All our products are hygienic and easy to clean or wash down.

Regularly check for any damage. Also check the castors run freely and rotate smoothly. If there is any sign of damage take the product out of service and order a replacement or spare part.
